Dealmaking Comes Alive

The M&A comeback is gaining momentum, giving a boost to stocks of all stripes. Industrials still await their turn.

A year ago, even getting a meeting to discuss merger and acquisition opportunities was a tough sell, says Howard Lanser, but now that some heavyweights have begun to throw their cash around, the Robert W. Baird banker says M&A is back at the top of the agenda.

The fundamental issue is that drastic cost-cutting helped companies shore up their bottom lines in 2009. With little incentive to rehire workers or ramp up production given the lingering uncertainties in the economy, many large firms are sitting on big cash hoards and will have to put their resources to use or risk drawing the ire of shareholders.
