Audit Senior Manager, Insurance Group

A Senior Manager in Blackman Kallick’s Insurance Group, John provides audit, accounting, and consulting services to property and casualty insurance companies, life insurance companies, insurance agencies, and self-insured risk pools.

John draws on more than a dozen years of experience in the insurance industry to address his clients’ financial needs through:

  • Managing financial statement audits in accordance with Statements of Statutory Accounting Principles (SSAP) and US generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP)
  • Assistance in evaluating and implementing new accounting pronouncements
  • Recommending opportunities to strengthen internal controls, improve internal processes, and protect against risks of fraud and misstatement
  • Assistance with preparation of quarterly and annual statement filings
  • Providing guidance in selecting and implementing software applications

John has dedicated his career to serving the insurance industry. Before joining Blackman, John spent 13 years with a regional accounting firm in Chicago. Working in such a highly regulated industry, he understands that responsiveness is critical. John is always available to provide well-informed, timely answers to questions — whether they deal with fair value, loss reserves, deferred income taxes, or regulatory compliance issues.

Constantly attuned to the many risks insurance companies face, in addition to emerging industry trends, John identifies ways to help companies strengthen their controls over both financial reporting and safeguarding assets. He takes advantage of advances in technology to modify existing processes or create a new framework that provides for improved accuracy and can save employees time during the monthly closing process.

John also understands the important role of the audit committee and works to assist its members in carrying out their responsibilities. He regularly communicates observations and insights, helping them build upon their understanding of the company’s overall risk profile and control environment. John ensures that audit committee members understand the key issues within the financial statements in addition to how changes in regulatory requirements or financial-statement pronouncements may affect the financial position of the entity in the future.

Credentials and Professional Involvement

An active participant in the insurance community, John is a member of Insurance Accounting and Systems Association (IASA) and Blue Goose Greater Chicago Pond. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the Illinois CPA Society, and he earned a BS in Accounting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
