Illinois Secretary of State Warns of Franchise Tax Business Scam

There is a new scam that attempts to get Illinois and Indiana businesses to file what looks like a franchise tax return and corporate minutes with a fee of $150. The Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White has posted a warning on the Secretary of State Web site that reads:

WARNING! A non-governmental firm called "Illinois Corporate Compliance" is contacting Illinois businesses in an attempt to collect a $150 fee to file corporate meeting minutes. Please be aware that corporations are NOT required by law to file minutes with ANY government or private entity. It is recommended that corporations do NOT reply to the solicitation.

If you receive any correspondence from the IRS, or any state taxing authority that asks for payment of a fee, forward the correspondence to your Blackman Kallick representative for their review.

Also, to guard against identity theft, under no circumstance should you respond to correspondence, e-mail or telephone requests asking for the confirmation or disclosure of personal or credit information.
