2009—What’s Hot and What’s Not?

With the first month of 2009 complete, here are the trends we're seeing so far:

What's Hot

  1. Law firm mergers/dissolutions
  2. IP Law—This area is going strong and even growing at some firms!
  3. Joining Obama's administration—Lawyers and law professors seem to be flocking to Washington, D.C., to be part of his team.
  4. Law firm hiring freezes
  5. Contract attorneys and paralegals—Despite all the downsizing and hiring freezes, many firms still have the same workload but with less help. Contractors are playing a prominent role in the law firm of today.

What's Not

  • Large, year-end bonuses at law firms
  • Printing this newsletter
  • Pay raises and rate increases—Many firms opted to freeze salaries to cut costs. They are also freezing rates to keep clients and work.
  • Real Estate Market
  • Blagojevich—Enough said

Blackman Kallick has a New Junior Staffer!

Jill Elden Rorem (and her husband Matt) welcomed Maeve Ethel Rorem on February 4, 2009 and will be out on leave for a few months. Never fear! We will continue operating our business as usual during this period including accepting and filling new permanent and contract orders for paralegals and attorneys. Should you have a temporary or permanent opening during Jill's absence, please contact Sara Gentry at 312-980-2915 or sgentry@BlackmanKallick.com. She will be happy to assist you!
