Donors Forum Issues the “Illinois Nonprofit Economy Report”

The Donors Forum, an association of grantmakers, recently released its latest research, the Illinois Nonprofit Economy Report: Implications for the Nonprofit Community. The report contains economic and employment information, as well as recommendations and implications for not-for-profit leaders, grantmakers, legislators and the public.

The report finds that the not-for-profit sector is important throughout Illinois, providing vital services and contributing to the economy of each of the state's 102 counties. Although the majority of the state's not-for-profits are located in the Chicago Metro region there tend to be more where populations are larger, every county in the state is served by not-for-profits. Eleven counties outside of the Chicago Metro region are each home to more than 100 not-for-profit organizations. Statewide, a strong local not-for-profit economic presence can provide economic stability amidst challenging economic times.

The research also shows that the not-for-profit sector in Illinois is strong—and growing. In 2005, there were just over 12,000 not-for-profits in the state—nearly double the number in 1990. With this growth, not-for-profits' contribution to the state's economy has also steadily increased. In the past fifteen years, nonprofit expenses—the best measure of their economic impact—grew by 163% to exceed $52.2 billiion in 2006. This exceeds the value of contributions made by durable good manufacturers.
